PHONTHIP STYLE THAI RESTAURANT

PHONTHIP STYLE THAI RESTAURANT

Phonthip Style Thai Restaurant is our favorite Thai food in Spokane. They make a bold, flavorful Panang Curry, spicy chicken entrees, and a creamy coconut rice and fresh mango dessert. Phonthip is “hole-in-the-wall” Thai at its finest. The space is small so be sure to get there early or stop in and take your food to go.

When you first walk into Phonthip, you can’t help but notice the authenticity behind the decor and overall ambiance. We got there around 5 pm on a Saturday night and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Shortly after the tables started to fill up and there were a lot of take-out orders being picked up throughout the night. Be prepared to place your order quickly and the food comes out fast. Like I said, it is a small space, so they are trying to turn tables. Our server was accommodating and sweet as could be. She didn’t speak much english but understood everything we needed her to. When a Thai restaurant is run by an all Thai staff, you know it’s going to be good.

What we ordered: (All entrees are served with fresh jasmine rice)

Appetizer- Shrimp Rolls: two ingredients. Shrimp and spring roll pastry. These rolls are rolled tight and thin, served with a sweet and sour sauce. They come out piping hot and be warned, you’ll want more than one.

Panang Curry: Panang curry paste with peanut sauce in coconut milk and topped with basil leafs for $10.95. This peanut curry was creamy, bold with flavor, and just the right mild kick. I prefer to pour it over my rice and eat it like soup, because it’s more socially acceptable to eat the sauce like this rather than plain with a spoon. Though I have been known to do that also.

Pad Thai: Stir fried small rice noodle with tofu, bean sprouts, scallion, egg and crunch peanuts for $9.95. This Pad Thai isn’t as spicy as we were expecting but Phonthip stocks each table with chili powder so you can add more spice to your liking. This portion size was smaller than the portion at Bangkok Thai but it’s just as much as you need, and leaves you room for dessert. Three words: Mango. Sticky. Rice.

Thai Ginger Chicken: sautéed fresh gingers, ear mushrooms, onions, bell peppers in bean sauce. I wanted to try one of the entrees with chicken and veggies (of some sort) but I couldn’t decide on one. I asked the waitress to bring me her favorite and this was way better than the sweet and sour chicken that I originally planned on ordering.

Rad Na: Stir fried noodle with broccoli, carrots, cabbage, mushroom and topped with gravy sauce for $9.95. Light on the noodles, heavy on the veggies and meat. The noodles were super soft with a mild sweet flavor and the sauce was generous.

Sweet and Sour chicken: sautéed onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, pineapples, scallions, and bell peppers in sweet and sour sauce for $9.95. I tend to shy away from sweet entree’s so this was my least favorite dish of what we tried but my sweet and sour chicken-loving-sister-in-law licked the plate clean.

Mango and Sweet Sticky Rice for $5.95. One of the reasons I love Thai food so much is because I know I will be getting mango stick rice for dessert. This sweet treat is made from rice soaked in coconut milk/coconut cream and topped with fresh, ripe mango. I was envious of half of our group because they had never tried it. I want to experience mango sticky rice for the first time again. I’ll never forget my reaction. The mango sticky rice at Phonthip is creamy, sweet, and tangy. The sweet combination is second to none. We had 5 people and mowed through two of these dishes without problem. I’d recommend ordering one for every 2-3 people. They only offer this dessert seasonally so be sure to get in there and try it before mango season is done and gone.
