RUINS

RUINS

Ruins has been on my “must-try” list for months! Every time I drive by Monroe and pass that bright blue building I think, “Man, I really need to go there!”. I also must mention that I have spent more time than I should have at their lovely neighbors, the court house. Stupid speeding tickets. Anyways…  yesterday was a gloomy, rainy day, so Ruins was a perfect way to brighten a dull Tuesday. Is Tuesday the worst day of the week, or is that just me?! Tuesdays SUCK.

Ruins doesn’t just do anything half way. They ensure that each of their dishes has just the right amount of ingredients, sauces, and quality. They have some kimchi options and spicy dishes on their menu. I was expecting a fine-dining lunch experience but Ruins doesn’t give you that. Instead, it’s very low key and divey. Each sandwich is about $8 and they are served on paper products. In a city saturated with restaurants, Ruins really stands out- and it’s not just because of their blue exterior.

I trust whoever is in that kitchen and whoever creates their menu. They offer a rotating menu that changes with the seasons so you are sure to always get to try something different. 20161004-img_3739

Their lunch menu offers around 10 sandwich options with a couple different sides. We ordered the Ahi tuna and the cold fried chicken sandwich with the brussels sprouts and french fries as sides. You guys… this was the best Ahi I have ever had. It literally melted in my mouth. The fish was so flaky and warm and mmmm mm yum! The cold fried chicken sandwich comes with pickled onions and a spicy sriracha sauce. Both sandwiches are served on toasted, soft buns. The french fry portion was huge and the brussels sprouts were shredded which made them a lot easier to eat and each bite was smothered with flavor. No salt or pepper necessary.

Another great feature about Ruins is their drink menu. They have a fantastic assortment of fresh made sodas, sparkling water, lemonade, tea, etc. We tried the fresh squeezed lemonade and the pomegranate soda. The lemonade was VERY tart without much sugar, and I couldn’t get enough. (insert sour squinty face) The Pomegranate soda was refreshing and had a bitter aftertaste. Both complimented a sandwich and fries nicely.

We asked the waiter about the ice cream sandwich for dessert and as soon as he said homemade chocolate chip cookies, we said “Yes Please!”. The cookies were warm and soft but there was only really enough ice cream to go with one of the two sandwich cookies. No regrets, it just meant we could take one home for later.

I can’t wait to come back to Ruins for dinner! I’m also adding this to one of my favorite lunch spots in the downtown area. It’s worth checking out for sure.

It seems like I always end up here on dull, dreary days when I am in desperate need of a ray of sunshine. Ruins is just that. With their bright blue exterior, they turn a day from drab to fab. Whenever people ask me for some of my top recommendations for Spokane restaurants, Ruins is always on that list. […]
