Football season is officially here and that means it’s time for Sunday afternoons spent with family, friends, our favorite team, and… food (duh)! Spokane has many local sports bars to choose from, but one of my new favorites may not have come across your radar yet. Scotty’s Doghouse, located by the Gonzaga campus, is one of my coolest new finds. From brunch, to karaoke, to an open dance floor and a killer menu, Scotty’s is far more than just your average sports bar.

Owned by GU alum Scott Wilburn and managed by Joey Larocque, Scotty’s was founded as an homage to the iconic Bulldog Pub, a past college bar with a 75-year history that closed in 2011. Founded with the Gonzaga and Greater Spokane community in mind, Wilburn and Larocque focus on bringing in a variety of events that can be enjoyed by those in the neighborhood, all while being backed by great food and drinks. With 9 huuuge TVs, sporting events are always a huge draw at Scotty’s. Karaoke contests take over the Lucky Pup (Scotty’s all-age sister restaurant), a dance club opens on Friday and Saturday, and bottomless mimosas are their signature on Sundays.

I want to jump ahead to my favorite part… the chicken strips, but let’s start with the man responsible. The kitchen is run by Chef George, who has previously worked at local favorites Zola and Mizuna. The food at Scotty’s aims to deliver delicious, well-made bar food using top-notch ingredients and cooking techniques. From burgers made with 100% fresh beef to the newly famous fried chicken and waffle cone, Scotty’s has something for everyone. Let me walk you through what I tried!

We started with the Doghouse Nachos featuring corn chips topped with cheddar jack cheese, tomatoes, black olives, green onion, jalapeños, black beans, corn relish and your choice of meat (we got chicken). Their secret to memorable nachos? Chef George layers cheese throughout the entire pile of chips so that you are guaranteed to get some with every bite! These nachos are great for sharing.

Next, we moved onto the chicken. Specifically the Buffalo Chicken sandwich and the Chicken Strips. Chicken Strip lover’s rejoice! Scotty’s strips, which are also featured on the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, are made from chicken breasts, hand battered, and made-to-order. These are the best chicken strips I’ve had in Spokane. Seriously, they were awesome.

We also tried their barbecue burger with a 1/3 fresh beef (never frozen) patty served with fries. This burger was stacked high and had nice crunch from the onions, sweetness from the sauce, and an extra juice burger patty.

What would a meal be without dessert? To finish, Chef George made a special brownie pazookie. For those of you who don’t know what a pazookie is, you are seriously missing out. Imagine a slightly doughy fresh cookie baked in a cast iron pan pulled directly from the oven and topped with ice cream. Then you go at it with spoons and get the warm, soft cookie and cold ice cream combo in each bite. This is my heaven.

Located at 1305 North Hamilton Street, Scotty’s is open from 11am – 2am Monday through Friday, and 10am – 2am Saturday and Sunday. Check them out, and as always, let them know that I sent you!

Sneak Preview! Scotty’s and I hit clearly hit it off quite nicely. So nicely in fact that I then went to visit its sister bar, The Globe. I can’t wait to share my experience there with you and to announce a very special event happening next month!
