CHAPS COFFEE CO

Stop what you are doing. Get in your car. Drive to Chaps. Eat brunch on the front patio. Thank me later.

People often ask me, “what is my favorite food?”. The answer: Brunch. I mean, is there anything better than a relaxing meal, preferably outside, to kick off your weekend and make you feel like all is right in the world after a hectic work week?

Chaps is a “brunchers” paradise. They have a massive, outdoor front-patio with numbered tables. Order inside, you are assigned a table, whether indoor or outdoor, then your food and drinks are brought to your assigned table. It’s very efficient and no one had to wait for a table, even though it was packed.

The owner, Celeste, is a gem. You can find her hard at work with a big smile on her face greeting customers, taking orders, bussing tables, she does it all. And, she does it all while enjoying herself- or she’s really good at faking it! 😉 With an owner like Celeste, it’s no wonder Chaps is such a success.

We started our brunch with a maple scone. I am a firm believer in eating dessert first. This is a family recipe that has been passed down, perfected, and polished at Chaps. The scone has pecan bits baked inside, and a flavorful maple glaze. We were told we HAD to try this scone. I didn’t put up a fight and it was a scone to be remembered. Next time I think I will order a dozen and take them home to freeze so I always have a secret stash to impress friends at events.

For the main course, we tried three different dishes to really get a feel for the Chaps menu and to make sure we tasted the sweet, the savory, and the salmon. I have a thing for salmon breakfast dishes. Sue me.

The Blueberry Muffin French Toast is exactly as it sounds. A THICK piece of bread-like-pastry that tastes just like a blueberry muffin, topped with blueberry sauce and cream cheese, not to be mistaken for whipped cream… oops. I really love a restaurant that puts their own unique spin on a traditional dish. This is Chaps. It was sweet, and moist and served sans syrup because it doesn’t need that extra flavor.

The Salmon Asparagus dish was my favorite. It was served on wheat bread with egg and topped with a creamy sauce. There is something about the salmon, runny egg combo that gets me every time. While, Salmon isn’t traditionally a breakfast item, it can be done right as long as the salmon is lightly seasoned and paired with egg and potatoes. The crunchy asparagus adds a fresh feel and good color to this hearty dish. Man oh man this dish was 5 STAR!

Dan’s favorite was the Eggs Benedict. This came with sliced ham and eggs on a fresh english muffin. The staff raved about their hollandaise and now I rave about their hollandaise. I kept sneakily dipping my potatoes in Dan’s hollandaise and he wasn’t being a good sharer. It’s good stuff, I don’t blame him. Most of their breakfast dishes are served with a side of roasted potatoes, generously seasoned and barely browned. Recipe for perfection.

I am so mad at myself that it took me almost two years to try Chaps! I kept putting it off because I would complain that it was too far or inconvenient or blah blah blah. It’s toward Cheney but the address is still in Spokane. Once you get on the highway, you are at Chaps in less than 10 minutes. I will beg all of my future brunch dates to make this our pick.

The décor, ambiance, staff, and food are all 5 STAR! The owner really loves this place and her passion and drive shows in the food creations, baked goods, and interior design. There is literally a vintage truck with flowers flooding the bed parked in the middle of the front, outdoor patio. If that isn’t screaming rustic, farm chick, I don’t know what is. So, like I said… get in the car and GO. You’ll be glad you did.
