DE LEON’S TACO & BAR

DE LEON’S TACO & BAR
  • Authentic and tasty tacos.
  • Great atmosphere and friendly service.
  • Affordable prices and lots of menu options.

As north siders, we will be regulars at De Leon’s Taco Bar on Saturdays around lunch time. It’s a great, chill spot to grab a bite without all the grease. At De Leon’s you know the ingredients are simple, homemade and fresh. If you haven’t visited their original location on 102 E Francis Ave, they have a tortilla factory, Hispanic grocery store, bakery, restaurant, and catering options.

I’m going to focus on their tacos because that is what really shines at De Leon’s Taco Bar. The Mahi Mahi tacos are my favorite. Hands down. Unfortunately, these aren’t included in their 6 taco sampler plate for $12. So, the best way to try a variety would be to get the 6 tacos sampler and add some Mahi Mahi and Shrimp Tacos on the side to try them all! Their Al Pastor tacos are authentic and we have to order one of those every time we come. The tacos are cheap and the meat is fresh and lightly seasoned. Did I mention their home-made tortillas? Yeah. They’re BOMB.

De Leon’s is known for their tamales and you can order these with chicken or pork served with rice and beans for $10. You can also enjoy their Steak Fajitas, Flautas, or Enchiladas. Besides the tacos, we tried their chicken quesadilla, Carnitas Tostada, Carne Asada Burrito, and the Rebel Burrito.

If you’re not in the mood for tacos, you should try this Rebel Burrito. It comes on a 16″ flour tortilla filled with carne asada, french fries, cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole. Ah, French fries in a burrito. In Texas we call this burrito a “Texano” and this one brought me right home to the cheap, hole-in-the wall Mexican fast food burrito joint I enjoyed (all too often) around midnight in college. #freshman15

My only complaint is that you don’t get unlimited chips and salsa to start your meal. Call me old fashioned, but the best part about eating at a Mexican restaurant is the unlimited chips and salsa to start your meal. If you want more than your first bowl of chips and salsa (which they gave us one bowl for 6 people) then you have to pay an extra $2.

All in all, the tacos are fairly priced and there are a lot of meat options. They have a fully stacked bar and they serve Tecate, XX Amber, Coors Light, Blue Moon, No-Li, and Summer Shandy on tap. I’m so happy we have this new north side spot. We were in desperate need for something with a little character and flair, and DeLeon has delivered! Be patient with their service as they are still very new and working out some kinks.
